Medusa WIP part 2

This is an update on my progress on the medusa image. I’m done with the body. Next up are the “tentacles”. I havn’t decided yet if I’m going to use the same technique as for the snakes on her head or if I’m going to make it simpler as not to pull too much focus. Either way it’s going to take a while to finish…

  1. The Medusa image is looking pretty cool although for some reason it lacks depth almost as if its a relief not sure if that was intentional but it does look nice :)

  2. hey. long time no see. :D

yeah, you are right, it’s pretty flat atm. (especially on monitors with a darker calibration than mine). It’s not something which will last though.

I’m experimenting with a new technique or approach to painting with photoshop (new to me at least). What you are looking at is pretty much an underpainting. The character will “pop out” really nisely once I add the “glazes” which will define her skin tone. The point of using such a flat underpainting is that I will use glazes with rich vibrant colors to bring focus to the right places, and glazes with less contrast and saturation to other places.

I’ve had trouble before trying to get everything in the image to “sing together” so to speak and by not exagerating the contrast and color too early I believe I get more “elbowroom” in the final stages of the process to decide exactly what should be in fokus and what should fall back in the composition.
